Montather is the gift that keeps on giving. The $8,000 tried horse purchase by Reece Goodwin Racing claimed another win at The Valley $130,000 MSC Signs Handicap (1600m) over the famous Cox Plate Carnival on Friday night.
The imported galloper has now won two races around The Valley and continues to add to his lucrative tally of career prizemoney after his modest purchase price.
Although Montather was coming into the race with some questionable formlines on paper, trainer Reece Goodwin was confident of a positive showing.
“Look, the horse has probably been going under the radar a little bit,” Reece Goodwin explained.
“He was great first up at a $100,000 race at Benalla when he was three deep on a day you needed to be close to the fence. He just had no luck the other day at Seymour from a wide draw.
“Willow gave him a great ride, they had an easy time in front. You could sort of see from the four, five hundred (metres) he was going to be in the hunt.”
The big chestnut, now an eight-year-old, has taken connections on a great ride with three wins and a further three city second placings which has earned him $188,000.
Montather had won three races in Europe with Roger Varian before calling Australia home but had not won since June 2021 when joining Reece Goodwin's Pakenham stable.
TBB Racing and clients purchased a share in Montather after he was purchased by Reece Goodwin Racing.
